Installing Ceiling Mounted Kitchen Shelves
Ceiling mounted kitchen shelves or cabinets should be capable of supporting a tremendous amount of weight. Cabinet construction should consist of 3/4-inch plywood with no particleboard, which won’t provide the needed support for the cabinet weight. When ceiling-mounted cabinets are also touching the wall, wall studs support the weight. When cabinets hang from the ceiling alone, such as in island cabinets, special bracing insures that the cabinet is secure when held in place by only the top.

Here are some things you need to complete the installation of ceiling mounted kitchen shelves; tape measure, poplar, 3/4-by-1 1/2-by-96 inches, miter saw, screw gun with magnetic tip, 3-inch screws and 2-by-4-by-96-inch studs.

After all the things we you need have been ready, you can start the project by measuring the height of the upper cabinet from the top to the bottom. Transfer that measurement from the ceiling down and mark it on the wall. Measure the distance from the mark, to the top of the base cabinet. Add 1/4 inch to that measurement and use a miter saw to cut four pieces of poplar to the measurement.

Remove the doors from the upper cabinet with a screwdriver. Set them aside. To do this, you need an assistant, lift the upper cabinet onto the base cabinet. Slide the upper cabinet up until it is tight against the ceiling. Tip the poplar props up underneath the cabinet; they will be at a slight angle. Hammer the props in a vertical position, wedging the cabinet tight against the ceiling and the wall.

Place a screw in the magnetic tip of a screw gun. On the back of the cabinet should be a 3/4-by-4-inch solid wood rail. Hold the screw 1 inch down from the top of the rail at a 30-degree angle. Drive the screw upward, through the rail and sheetrock, into the top plate of the framing. Place successive screws 6 inches apart along the back edge of the cabinet.

Run a stud finder underneath the cabinet to locate the studs in the wall behind the cabinet. Drive one screw centered through the cabinet’s top rail, through the sheetrock and into each of the vertical studs. Follow the stud’s centerline down and place two more screws through the back of the cabinet, one half way up from the bottom and one 1 inch up from the bottom to secure the cabinet.

Don’t be afraid to force the cabinet up tight into the ceiling. You should hear creaking when you apply pressure to the props. If they are not tight, cut new ones. If you are going to install ceiling cabinets with no bases underneath them, just cut extra-long props that reach all the way to the floor. If your screw doesn’t tighten securely, you probably missed the stud. Move the screw to the left or right 1 inch and try again. Avoid attempting to lift upper cabinets by yourself, they are too heavy. Always use an assistant. Consider these tips and warnings when you are installing the ceiling mounted kitchen shelves.
