Designing DIY Small Kitchens

Small, cramped spaces can be the cause of difficult design dilemmas. So often it is kitchens that seem to be lacking in space. Thinking about all the tasks that go on in the kitchen and all the appliances and tools necessary to complete those tasks provides reason why kitchens can easily become tight territory. Designing DIY small kitchens require a good deal of planning on the homeowner’s behalf. The goal is to create all the functionality of a large, spacious kitchen in an area that is half the size or smaller.

Think about the current design of your home overall. You will want to match your kitchen to adjoining spaces as best you can. Keep in mind that the goal is to achieve a cohesive look without compromising space or functionality. Use a similar color palette to the ones found in surrounding rooms. For example, if the dining room is beside the kitchen and it is painted red, do not paint the kitchen bright green. A neutral color like beige or white will not only complement colors in surrounding spaces but will make the kitchen appear bigger than it really is. In fact, any light color will give the illusion of a larger space.

Consider furniture choices are the other best thing to remember when you designing DIY small kitchens.  If you plan on putting a table in your kitchen, think about a cafe style table with just two chairs. If more chairs are necessary, consider transparent chairs made of plastic. Understand that transparent chairs generally factor into modern design more than traditional, so use them only if they will add to the cohesiveness of your home. Think about using a glass mirror as a countertop backsplash to give the illusion of additional countertop space and depth.

Create functionality. Keep the countertops free of bulky appliances. If you do not use the toaster, blender, coffee pot, or can opener on a daily basis, store them inside a cabinet so they’ll be out of sight. You will instantly achieve more countertop space this way. If you do not have enough cabinet space to store your appliances, consider buying a corner cupboard that will fit snugly against the walls. It won’t take up much space and it will give you storage for appliances and possibly dishes as well.
